Neck Pain and Headaches
Neck pain and headaches are common issues that can arise from a range of causes, with symptoms appearing suddenly or developing gradually over time. The severity and nature of these symptoms can differ significantly from person to person. Whether it’s mild stiffness or more intense discomfort, neck pain and headaches can have a major impact on your day-to-day life, work, and general well-being.
At SurfEdge Physiotherapy, our team treats a variety of musculoskeletal neck pain and neck-related headaches. These headaches often stem from pain in areas such as the base of the neck, upper back, shoulders, ribcage, or jaw. This pain can then radiate upwards, leading to headaches.
There are many factors that contribute to neck pain and headaches. Physical issues like poor posture are common causes, but other contributing factors include psychological stress, hormonal or chemical imbalances in the brain, food sensitivities, and poor sleep. Each of these can contribute to the tension and discomfort that lead to neck pain and headaches.
At SurfEdge Physiotherapy, we take a holistic approach to assess and treat these conditions. By understanding the underlying causes—whether physical, emotional, or lifestyle-related—we can create personalised treatment plans designed to suit your specific needs. Whether you're dealing with mild discomfort or more complex symptoms, we’re here to help you find relief and improve your quality of life.
Symptoms

Following a head or neck injury, you may experience a variety of symptoms, including:

-
Pain or stiffness in the neck, upper back, or head.
-
Difficulty moving your head or neck freely.
-
Tightness in the muscles of the neck and shoulders.
-
Sharp, shooting pains in the neck, head, or arms.
-
A gradual, often one-sided ache at the base of the skull or at the back of the head. This pain can sometimes extend to the temporal region, above the ears, or behind the eyes. Migraines are more likely to affect both sides of the head and may shift sides, unlike cervicogenic headaches, which tend to remain on one side.
-
Difficulty performing your usual physical activities or tasks
