Kirstie Tyson
Founder and Principal PhysiotherapistDoctor of Physiotherapy, Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science, APAM
Kirstie Tyson is the Principal Physiotherapist at SurfEdge Sports Physiotherapy and works closely with athletes both in the clinic and on field.
With over 15 years immersed in sport as a physiotherapist, alongside experience as an elite athlete, coach and official, Kirstie brings a well-rounded understanding of performance, recovery, and the demands of high-level competition. She has worked with athletes and performers across a wide range of disciplines including dance, acrobatics, sailing, softball, marathon running, triathlon, and cricket, giving her a broad perspective on movement and performance under pressure.
Kirstie is a member of the Medical Advisory Group for Surf Life Saving Australia and is involved in physiotherapy service provision at major events such as The Aussies, the Coolangatta Gold, and the Lifesaving World Championships. She is also actively involved with the Australian Physiotherapy Association, sitting on the APA Sports and Exercise QLD committee. At a local level, Kirstie supports surf lifesaving athletes within the club environment, with a focus on keeping competitors performing at their best through targeted rehabilitation, injury prevention, and long-term athlete management.
Her clinical approach is grounded in thorough assessment, hands-on treatment, and progressive strength and conditioning. Kirstie places a strong emphasis on accurate diagnosis, individualised care, and helping people build resilience so they can recover well and continue performing long term.
Kirstie has a particular clinical interest in load-related injuries and the application of evidence-based load management principles in both rehabilitation and performance. This sits alongside her extensive experience in lower limb injury rehabilitation, including complex knee presentations and ACL injuries. She has completed further training in concussion management, dry needling, hip and shoulder rehabilitation, sports vision, brain endurance, and strength and conditioning, and has presented her ACL rehabilitation research at national and international conferences.
Outside the clinic, Kirstie enjoys volunteering, swimming, coastal walks, and spending time at the beach with her family and dog.
